TIME BY THE WATER
Large bodies of water with a mountain panorama, small forest lakes and riverside paths for a quiet afternoon: every lake around Füssen has its own character. Here you will find the differences and ideas for your day at sea. When swimming, use the designated access points and follow the local information.
EXPANSES, MOUNTAINS AND SHIPS
The Forggensee is the large lake in front of Füssen. From the southern bank you can see the city skyline, the mountains and, if the angle is right, the royal castles. In summer, the wide expanse of water invites you to go on bike rides, take a swim or take a trip on the excursion boats.
The lake is a reservoir and changes greatly throughout the year. In winter the water level is lowered; The summer shore scenery is therefore seasonal. For a relaxing day, you can walk to the boat harbor or drive to a designated swimming spot. If you want to go around the lake, you will find a suitable tour on our cycling page.
Good to know: For boat trips and bathing days, pay attention to the current water level, the timetable and the local bathing instructions.
WALK WITH PANORAMA
At Hopfensee, mountain views and riverside life coexist. The promenade in Hopfen offers places to take a break, while the circular path around the lake opens up quieter sections. Especially in the evening, the light changes the view of the Alps.
The lake is perfect for a leisurely day trip: take a walk, eat something along the way and, if the season is right, use a designated swimming access. From Füssen you can reach Hops by public transport or bike. The signposted circular route is a good way to get to know the lake from several perspectives.
Good to know: Reserve about half a day for the circular hike with breaks.
A FOREST LAKE WITH ITS OWN MOOD
Hidden between wooded slopes lies the Alatsee west of Bad Faulenbach. Its darker water, forest backdrop and quiet location give it a special atmosphere. It is also known as the setting for a Kluftinger crime novel.
You can plan the lake as a destination for a walk or a longer hike. The path through the Faulenbacher Valley connects it with Obersee and Mittersee; There is another access from the Weißensee page. It's easy to take a break around the lake. If you want to go higher, you will find hiking trails towards Saloberalm.
Good to know: The photos show the forest and hiking atmosphere in the Füssen Lake District.
AT THE FOOT OF THE ROYAL CASTLES
Directly at Hohenschwangau, the Alpsee lies between steep, forested slopes. Together with the castles, this creates one of the most striking landscapes in the region. Even a short walk along the northern bank offers beautiful perspectives of water and mountains.
For a longer stay, you can get to know the lake on the circular route or combine the visit with a castle and the museum. The Alpseebad is its own bathing facility; It's best to check access and opening times in advance. The circular route is more varied than a flat promenade, which is why appropriate shoes are useful even on a day at sea.
Good to know: A visit to the castle with a fixed tour date and an extensive circular route need enough space in your daily plan.
SEA DAY ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF FÜSSEN
The Weißensee combines unobstructed mountain views with a varied shore. Around the Füssen district you will find opportunities for a day of swimming and a walk. The north bank is more open; On the south side the circular path becomes narrower and closer to nature.
The southern bank path is not suitable for families with strollers. Choose a suitable section on the north bank. Anyone who is good on foot can experience the entire lake on the circular route. Cyclists also use Weißensee as a starting point for smaller tours into the lake landscape. The current tour map helps you to sensibly connect bathing access and route options.
Good to know: The pictures show the lake landscape around Füssen and cycling in the area; they are not detailed views of the Weißensee.

CALM WATER IN FRONT OF THE MOUNTAINS
The Schwansee is located between Füssen and Hohenschwangau in an open park and meadow landscape. Compared to the large waterfront promenades, a trip here seems quieter. The mountains and the proximity to the royal castles still give the small lake an impressive backdrop.
You can reach it on foot or by bike and can combine your stay with paths in the Schwanseepark. Stay on the designated paths and only use permitted access points for swimming. The surroundings are beautiful even without a swim break: with a book, a snack or simply a walk through the countryside.
Good to know: For a quiet stroll, the lake is also worth it in the evening. Please note the instructions for protecting the surrounding meadows and banks.
A LITTLE BREAK IN BAD FAULENBACH
The Mittersee is part of the small lake landscape in the Faulenbacher Valley. Just a walk from the old town you will find a quieter environment with forest, water and paths to breathe deeply.
Combine the lake with a path through Bad Faulenbach, a break in the park or a detour to the neighboring Obersee. For a longer tour, the path continues towards Alatsee. If you want to swim, find out about the respective facilities, access and current operations on site.
FOREST, WATER AND SHORT PATHS
Next to the Mittersee is the Obersee in the Faulenbacher Valley. The wooded shore and manageable size make it a pleasant destination for an afternoon without a long journey. Especially in autumn, the trees give the lake a different look.
A walk through Bad Faulenbach can easily be extended here. The Four Lakes cycle route also leads through this landscape. For swimming, the information and opening times of the respective facility apply. You can use the same walking path to return to the old town and end the day in the Füssen alleys.
Good to know: The second photo shows a hiking impression from the region.
LAKE AND MEADOW LANDSCAPE
To the northeast of the royal castles, the Bannwaldsee lies in a vast landscape of meadows, wetlands and mountains. The lake is suitable as a destination for a bike tour and for a stay at the designated bathing areas.
Not every stretch of shore is freely accessible: nature and protection zones are part of the landscape here. Use official channels and respect local advice. If you want to get to know the area, you can plan a tour through the neighboring towns. This way you can see more of the landscape than if you just stay in one spot by the water.
Good to know: The cycle route runs around the landscape of the lake and is not a complete riverside path directly on the water.
