YOUR PACE DECIDES
The classic variant spreads the Lechweg over seven hiking days. With eight days, some sections become shorter; the ten-day variant adds two rest days. This includes your journey and, if necessary, a night at your destination. “Comfortable” doesn’t automatically mean easy: the eight-day version also includes longer hiking days and climbs.
The Lechweg is divided into 15 path sections. These short sections are not a requirement for 15 overnight stays. You combine them into daily stages and book your accommodation in the appropriate locations. Our plan below is based on the official eight-day variant.
Good to know: Plan arrival and departure additionally. The times in the stage plan are walking times; There are also breaks and routes to accommodation.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS HIGH TOP
At Formarinsee the path begins in a high alpine landscape. You walk from the lake towards Lech and experience how the small streams gradually become the river that you follow for the next few days. The first few kilometers are among the particularly impressive sections.
The starting point can be reached depending on the season. Plan the route to Formarinsee and check the current hiking bus and the approval of the upper path. Lech is the first overnight stop in the variant described here and offers a good end to this first day.
Good to know: The entire Lechweg is usually only accessible from the early summer season. Current snow and trail conditions are crucial.
THROUGH FOREST AND MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE
After the start in Lech, a day follows near the river, forest and views of the mountains. The landscape changes along the way, while the Lech remains your common thread. Warth is at the end of this stage and is the next possible overnight stop.
The number of kilometers is shorter than on some later days, but you should not judge the stage based solely on its length. Differences in height and the ground take time. It's worth planning generously for breaks along the way and packing enough food.
Good to know: The photos show the section at Lech as well as Seebachsee and the townscape of Warth.
CONNECT VORARLBERG AND TYROL
From Warth, the Lechweg continues across the landscape near Gehren towards Steeg. On this stage the transition into the Tyrolean Lech valley becomes noticeable. Wide views alternate with quieter passages along the way.
Steeg is the next overnight stop in our eight-day plan. Use the day to find your own rhythm: start early in the morning, take breaks consciously and keep an eye on the remaining route. Flexible daily planning helps, especially in changeable weather.
Good to know: The length is rounded; the exact distance changes depending on the starting point and accommodation in town.
VILLAGES AND SUSPENSION BRIDGE
The path continues via Hägerau and Holzgau towards the stream. The townscapes and the landscape around Holzgau set a different accent than the high mountains at the beginning. The suspension bridge near Holzgau is one of the well-known experiences on the Lechweg; You can check current route variants and access in the official description.
With around six hours of walking time, this day is longer. Plan time for the villages and for breaks without underestimating the rest of the route. Bach is the intended overnight stop in this variant.
Good to know: Follow current local information for bridges and alternative routes.
MEADOWS, PLACES AND WATER
The route continues to Elmen via the Elbigenalp and Häselgehr area. Meadows, settlements and the water landscape give the day its variety. Around the Doser waterfall and the paths in the valley you can see how different the stages along the same river can be.
Elmen is an ideal stopover. If you choose the ten-day option, additional time is planned for a break in the Lechtal. Even without a fixed day of rest, it is worth checking the next stages in good time and reserving accommodation in advance.
Good to know: The nature park house in the third picture is in the Elmen area and adds insights into the river landscape to the hike.
A LONG DAY IN THE LECHTAL
You hike to Weißenbach via Vorderhornbach, Stanzach and Forchach. The valley landscape widens, the Lech remains distinctive with its gravel surfaces and changing banks. This section makes it clear why a multi-day hike is more than a series of individual sights.
At around twenty kilometers it is one of the longer days of this variant. Start on time and pack enough water and food. Weißenbach is the next overnight stop; You should also take into account any routes from the Lechweg to the accommodation.
Good to know: The pictures show Baichlstein and the meadows near Weißenbach as landscape impressions from this area of the Lechtal.
PROSPECTS AROUND REUTTE
The Lechweg continues to Pflach via the Rieden, Höfen and Wängle area. Viewpoints and the landscape at Reutte characterize this stage. In the Frauensee area and on the Lechauen, other perspectives on the river and its surroundings open up.
The daily route remains long, even if the target Füssen is now getting closer. Plan enough time for the climbs and the way to the accommodation. Pflach is the last overnight stop in the eight-day option; From here the last stage to Füssen begins the next morning.
Good to know: On the way in the area Reutte: Costaries Chapel, Frauensee and the bird watching tower near Pflach.
LAKES, CASTLES AND THE LECHFALL
The last stage leads back to Germany via the Pinswang area. Alpsee, Alpine Rose Trail and Kalvarienberg make the conclusion particularly varied. Finally you reach the Lechfall in Füssen - the destination of the Lechweg.
After the last photo you can arrive in the Füssen old town, go out for dinner and end the hike. Our hostel is located at Reichenstraße. Book your last night in advance so that everything is prepared after the long day. An additional night gives you time to get to know Füssen and the royal castles in peace.
Good to know: The values refer to the official route section Pflach–Füssen. The path from Lechfall to the hostel is added.
WELL PREPARED FOR THE WAY
The high starting region is crucial for the entire route. The usual season extends from mid or late June to mid-October; Snow, weather and current releases can shorten it. Lower sections are possible for earlier hikes if they are open.
Book the overnight stays in good time and check bus connections, luggage service and daily routes on the official Lechweg page. The path can also be walked in the opposite direction from Füssen. Then our hostel is your starting point before the first stage. Outward and return travel planning is required in both directions.
Good to know: The Füssen Card is a regional guest card. It is not a blanket ticket for all transfers along the entire Lechweg.
