As the largest artificial reservoir in Germany, this lake is only fully dammed from July to mid-October. In summer, boat hire and the Forggensee boat tour offer the opportunity to explore the shores of the lake for yourself.
As most of the water is drained during the winter, you can still explore the remains of the Via Claudia, an old Roman road, and the "Villa Rustica". The drained lake also provides a beautiful backdrop.
Alpsee in Hohenschwangau
Surrounded by mountains and with a view of the two royal castles, this lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany.
If it's too cold for swimming, you can also explore the lake in one of the rowing boats available for hire. It is also possible to walk around the lake. The Alpsee circular trail takes about 1.5 hours and is not demanding. In winter, the lake is ideal for ice skating in good conditions.
Schwansee in Hohenschwangau
Due to its close proximity to the royal castles, the lake is part of the Schwansee Park. This was commissioned by the Bavarian royal family in the middle of the 19th century. The lake offers a sunbathing lawn with views of the surrounding mountain landscape. In winter, it is suitable for ice skating in the right conditions.
Hopfensee
The location of the lake offers a unique panorama of the surrounding mountains. Not without reason is it called the "Riviera of the Allgäu". On the lakeside promenade in Hopfen, the many different restaurants and cafés invite you to feast.
In summer, there is a boat rental, kiosk and mini golf course. As one of the warmest pre-alpine lakes, swimming is also possible in spring. The lake can be circumnavigated in 1.5 hours all year round. The Hopfensee circular trail is also suitable for less sporty people and families. Ice skating is very popular here in the right conditions.
